A number of years ago, a Reddit user posed the question to Neil deGrasse Tyson: “Which books should be read by every single intelligent person on the planet?”
Below, you will find the book list offered up by the astrophysicist, director of the Hayden Planetarium, and popularizer of science. Where possible, we have included links to free versions of the books.
1.) The Bible (eBook) — “to learn that it’s easier to be told by others what to think and believe than it is to think for yourself.”
2.) The System of the World by Isaac Newton (eBook) — “to learn that the universe is a knowable place.”
3.) On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn of our kinship with all other life on Earth.”
4.) Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn, among other satirical lessons, that most of the time humans are Yahoos.”
5.) The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn how the power of rational thought is the primary source of freedom in the world.”
6.) The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn that capitalism is an economy of greed, a force of nature unto itself.”
7.) The Art of War by Sun Tsu (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn that the act of killing fellow humans can be raised to an art.”
8.) The Prince by Machiavelli (eBook — Audio Book) — “to learn that people not in power will do all they can to acquire it, and people in power will do all they can to keep it.”
Tyson concludes by saying: “If you read all of the above works you will glean profound insight into most of what has driven the history of the western world.”
He has also added some more thoughts in the comments section below, saying:
Thanks for this ongoing interest in my book suggestions. From some of your reflections, it looks like the intent of the list was not as clear as I thought. The one-line comment after each book is not a review but a statement about how the book’s content influenced the behavior of people who shaped the western world. So, for example, it does no good to say what the Bible “really” meant, if its actual influence on human behavior is something else. Again, thanks for your collective interest. ‑NDTyson

What’s the book that teaches scientists to stay in their lane?
Neil D. Tyson revealed his atheism and Woke socialism
in his comments about The Bible and The Wealth of Nations. I refuse to watch his leftist YouTube videos and TV shows because he’s an arrogant know-it-all who knows little.
Dr. Tyson has stated, more than once, that he an Agnostic, NOT an Atheist. His comment on how Adam Smith’s book was used by some of the people who misused his famous book to justify aggressive Capitalism. By the way, the Bible, both Old and New Testament NEVER condemmed slavery. Jesus said nothing about it.
The Old Testament also says in an early section that you can execute your children if they disobey you, even just a little. So, do you want to bring back Slavery and increase the number of children who get amurdered (Special ‘thanks’ to the NRA)? Do you realize the last part of your letter (…” he’s an arrogant know-it-all who knows little.”) describes tha man you support as our President? Have a nice day.
Further proof that he is a pretentious pseudo-intellectual.
So I take it you’re not a fan of know it all. I agreed not a big fan of our current know it all President. He believes he’s a genius… NOT! HAVE A NICE DAY.
Great minds think outside the box. Feeble, narrow minded are Jack in the Box. Just waiting to someone to crank their gear to pop up at a moment notice… Like Congress. Have a nice day.
Most of the ebooks, here linked to Project Gutenberg, are also available for free download from Standard Ebooks, which offers better formatting and better covers (although I understand that the latter offer no basis for judging the book).
Then why are you reading his posts and commenting on them? So you are not an arrogant know it all who gets upset encountering people who don’t think the way you do? Oh, and socialism isn’t ‘woke’, it’s just a school of thought on how to organize political and economic life. You can like it or not, and it predates ignorant ‘woke’ comments by more than a century.
Took the words right out of my mouth!
You cannot change a maga, warp and deranged minded people. Trump got them well trained. Just follow my policy to save yourself the headache in explaining to the numb nuts. Just state: I make it my policy not to argue to people who believe in their own idiocy. Enough said.
Indeed, the Bible does teach us to think for ourselves instead of having the world tell us what to think under the threat of its ridicule and rejection. When I was like Neil, I was afraid to think for myself. Now I’m not afraid to question anything and everything.
thamk you for this wonderful information on books, films, etc. etc.
Amazing really. How fortunate to live in this era.
Am seeking the film “Henry V” quite old.
Not in your list.
But just asking.
Thank you.

Judging by his comments I don’t think Neil has read any of those books.
